Homemade braided Christmas bread from yeasted dough – fluffy, buttery and full of Christmas aroma

Sweet braided Christmas bread made from yeasted dough is one of those classics that really makes your home “smell like Christmas.” A fluffy loaf full of butter, raisins and almonds that you slice for tea in the morning, spread with butter or jam, and finally feel the holidays have begun. This method is written so yeasted dough won’t intimidate you — everything goes step by step; we explain the starter, the right milk temperature and how to simply braid the loaf so it holds its shape. No bakery, just your kitchen, common ingredients and a bit of time. It pairs perfectly with a plate of vanilla crescents and Christmas gingerbread.

Kitchen tip

If you're afraid the braided sweet bread will crack or spread, make it lower and wider rather than tall and narrow. You can also bake the dough in a loaf pan – the braid will keep its shape and be easier to handle. And if you want to save yourself morning stress, bake it the evening before – it's often even better the next day as the flavors settle.

Variants and alternatives

Lemon–orange version: in addition to lemon zest, add a little grated orange zest. The braid will smell wonderful and feel even more "festive".
